Open Mic Night: SF talent graces Rockit Room stage

The upstairs room gets a quick makeover for Open Mic Night.

By Jessica Graham

Last Wednesday night, Richmond district locals came in from the cold sidewalks of San Francisco and took refuge upstairs for Open Mic Night, an event that takes place weekly at Rockit Room. Small tables, chairs and a bench were placed closely near the stage, giving the room a more intimate feeling. Friends gathered chatting in between performances, giving artists a chance to tune their instruments, take their place and get in the zone.

It was my first time covering an Open Mic Night event since my good friend John Predny would play his favorite songs for friends and family over a year ago. At that time, it was a much smaller production downstairs near the entrance. He would play the guitar and bellow out powerful notes that would inevitably make their way outside, filling the ears of pedestrians walking by.

Moving to the upstairs room gave it a whole other feel and sound. The lights were dim except for the blue rays glimmering off of the stage. It’s a big room, but still had a cozy feel thanks to a crowd of friendly people, two of which were dancing with each other playfully.

I wasn’t sure how many people would be there to perform, but I was pleasantly surprised to see the sign-up sheet full, with new artists walking in the door throughout the night. The highlight of the night for me, was a thin brown-haired woman who belted out “Son of a Preacher Man”. You can see a video of her below:

If you are looking for a relaxed night with friends, full of good music and cold beers, definitely stop by for Open Mic Night. If you are an artist, take a chance, sign your name on the dotted line and get up on that stage. We’re all waiting for you.

Homage to the Rockit Room Crew

These guys keep the Rockit Room going. They make your drinks, meet you at the door, play the music you dance to and most importantly, throw your ass on the street if you drank too much. Just kidding, we are all friendly here ;)

“Clone Me” Video Release Party

By Natalia Vasquez

Step into the future with pop rock performer Bray as he releases his newest music video for his track “Clone Me” here at the Rockit Room November 5th. Bray hails from the Bay Area but his fresh sound has taken him throughout Europe. His pop rock tunes and Bowie-esque performance style leaves listeners feeling energized and ready to groove. Bray charges his sound with playfulness and creativity unique to his playful attitude.

Bray has a background in electronic music production and graphic design but creativity runs in his genes. His Grandmother performed often, leaving an impression on Bray. From a young age Bray found himself making others laugh and grew up with the likes of late performing genius Michael Jackson who infamously reinvented himself with each project. Similarly, Bray invests himself completely in each track and finds a different way to portray his music. “We explore visual trickery into the videos,” Bray explains of past music video “Hair” where he is singing in a saloon type bar watching a couple spit game. “I’m super involved with this newest project conceptually, but I’m fortunate to work with a lot of great people.”

Bray is preparing for yet another tour throughout Europe where he will promote his upcoming album. Expect to be wowed by the latest songs from his unreleased album Saturday night, where he will unveil the well kept secrets of his latest creative project. Bray has played in international cities the likes of Berlin, Germany and Paris, France and cannot wait to hop across the pond once more. The European crowd has allowed Bray to channel the darker side of feeling, particularly after playing the war-torn city of Sarajevo, Bosnia. “A young lady told me to be aware of my audience, because they experienced so much pain she explained ‘when we see all smiles we don’t think it’s real.’” This one word of advice has inspired Bray to put more range into the newest album.

“For me, it defines me and channeling who I am moment to moment and to channel who the listener is too,” Bray comments with raw honesty. His own creative control may be the single most important promise and record label can make to this artist, as he remains unsigned after a “handful of offers,” Bray says carefully. With this video release he ends promotion of his album @mphibian and looks forward to working with his team to “celebrate being alive and to embrace the dark side of the life and be a complete me in front of people.”

Charity Jam: Just for Jax

Jaxson Soriano

By Jessica Graham

Imagine your son or daughter is diagnosed with a rare disease from birth. Your doctor tells you a liver transplant is needed, but it’s expensive. This is a true story for Lily Beth Soriano and her 2-year-old son Jaxson, who has Biliary Artesia–a congenital disease that affects the liver and gallbladder.

This Friday, November 4, Rockit Room is hosting a Charity Jam to help the Sorianos raise money for a liver transplant. The event will feature local bands Native Elements and Rendezvous, and DJ E-Train.

The $10 cover at the door will be donated to Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA), in honor of Jaxson. His personal page on COTA’s Web site chronicles his journey battling Biliary Artesia.

In total, his liver transplant will cost around $1 million to $2 million dollars. Those who cannot attend the event can still donate to Jax at http://www.cotaforjaxsons.com/.

Claudine: San Francisco Songstress Debuts Album at Rockit Room

By Jessica Graham

After a long day teaching elementary school kids, Claudine picks up her children and heads back to her home in the Bay.

When she isn’t teaching or being super mom, she is recording and promoting her new album, “Wrestling Consciousness”, a project that has been two and a half years in the making.

The album features 15  tracks, 14 of which Claudine wrote herself and created with the help of Mark Kenoly, her producer and bass player and one cover of Leonard Cohen’s infamous “Hallelujah”. Kenoly helped Claudine, who had never played a musical instrument, bring the music she heard in her head to life.

“He was the one that worked all those hours with me and believed in me. I still had these thoughts in my head that I was too old, that I wasn’t good enough, that I can’t do this , and it’s stupid,” said Claudine. “He was really the one that hushed all those voices.”

Claudine grew up in San Bruno and has stayed close to the Bay Area her whole life. She always loved singing, but did not receive much support from her family. Instead, she pursued an academic career. Although she couldn’t make music her focus, Claudine continued to sing any way she could, often participating in church choirs and bands, all the while continuing to write.

Claudine kept singing even as an adult, performing at weddings and for friends. A few years back, she met a group of people, including Kenoly, who encouraged her to share her gift with the world. With a book stocked full of songs written over the years, Claudine hit the studio to record—funding her album herself.

Claudine spent countless hours writing and singing, then singing some more, often in a Santa Clara recording studio. Her most personal song, “In the Ruins”, was one of the toughest tracks to write. The song is about the struggles that women who are sexually abused go through.

“It took me my whole life to write,” said Claudine. “When I finally finished it, it felt so good. I knew that when anyone heard that song, I was speaking to so many women who didn’t feel comfortable to share or felt to blame or felt they were the ones who were wrong some how.  Mainly, my hope is that when they listen, at the very least, they will know they are not alone.”

Her other favorites, “If I Ran to You” and “All I Want”, are personal as well, like many of the tracks on her album. Her sound, accoding to her Facebook page, is “like Gwen Steffani and Pink, cooking in the kitchen”.

Claudine will be performing these songs, including many others, this Friday at the Rockit Room at her record release party. The party is also a fundraiser for the Make-a-Wish foundation—a foundation very close to Claudine’s heart.

Now that she has finished her first album, Claudine is already planning her next move. She plans to make another album, but faster. By working in longer spurts, she hopes to get more work done while still having time to spend with her family.

“Even if I don’t continue to perform and sing,” said Claudine, “I will be connected to music until my last breath, I’m sure.”

Rockit Room’s Smiths Night Featured in Gap Magazine!

The Certain People Crew, who deejay the regular Smiths night at Rockit Room, were featured in Gap Magazine! We love these guys, so take a minute to check out this epic article.

Style Trial: Original Fit x Certain People Crew (Gap Magazine)

Photo from Gap Magazine
Fact: the search for the perfect jean is tedious. For everyone. If you’re a guy, you can at least stock up when you find the right fit. You can buy multiple pairs in the same wash and wear them every day until they shred. No one will think anything of it. They might even admire your consistency—which for dudes is tantamount to style.

With this in mind, we put our newest denim, the original fit, to the test with a group of regular guys—our friends and local DJs, the Certain People Crew (CPC).

Photo from Gap Magazine. We invaded their practice space (which is really DJ Politik’s super sleek bachelor pad) and in the midst of watching football, talking limited edition records, dodging sprints by Nanoo (a hyper-cute hyperactive French bulldog), and scoring a heated foosball tournament, we managed to get a few photos.

Behind the Scenes: EBone & “All In the Bay” release party

By Jessica Graham

EBone poses with Jason Axis, who will be receiving all proceeds from the event to help with his medical bills.

In a room full of San Francisco locals and Bay Area artists, San Francisco-based rapper EBone celebrated the release of his new album, “All in the Bay.” The release party doubled as a cancer benefit for EBone’s long-time friend Jason Axis, who was diagnosed with Burkett’s Lymphoma.

EBone released his first album in 1995, followed by a second in 2000. After stepping out of the rap game for several years, he returned with full force teaming up with artists, such as Rappin’ 4 Tay and Fatlip from the Pharcyde.

His newest album features several artists in the Bay Area rap music scene, including some that have worked with Snoop Dog and Tupac.

“I try to keep it as real as I can, I don’t walk around saying I have ten cases of drugs and all these guns,” said EBone, also known as Eric Robles, about his album. “I grew up in the city, so it has a little city flavor in it.”

EBone was born and raised in the Richmond district avenues and Bernal Heights. His tattoo reflects his close relationship with the city he grew up in. It features the Golden Gate Bridge, Ocean Beach and the Cliffhouse restaurant.

When he was a teenager, he met Axis, and they have been good friends ever since. With an album release party in the works, Ebone decided to team up with other artists to raise money for his friend.

“People should help out more at events like this,” said EBone. “When a person is really sick, we have to share the love and help each other out.”

The record release party also featured a raffle for several items, including a massage and gift certificates to a surf and clothing shop. All profits were given to Axis. A group of Hawaiian graffiti artists also auctioned a few pieces of art for the cause.
